BUT HOW MANY DOLLARS?! As many as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were paid for first shots of twins Vivienne and Knox? Nope, not $14 million. As much moulah as Jennifer Lopez scored for introductory images of twins Emme and Maximillian? Nope, not $6 million either.

Really, it’s an embarrassingly small sum.

People With HIV at Higher Odds of Sudden Cardiac Death

MONDAY, May 14 People with HIV/AIDS are four times more likely to die of sudden cardiac arrest than those in the general population, a new study finds.

The findings held true even for people with well-controlled HIV, according to researchers from the University of California, San Francisco . In sudden cardiac arrest, also referred to as sudden cardiac death, the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.

The researchers looked at the health records of more than 2,800 HIV patients from April 2000 to August 2009. About 8 percent died during an average follow-up period of nearly four years.

Cardiac-related events accounted for 15 percent of those deaths.

The health care system may be ailing, but newly compiled data show that compensation for top executives at Connecticut hospitals remains healthy.

Eighteen executives at the state’s 30 hospitals made more than $1 million in 2009-10, according to information the hospitals reported to the Internal Revenue Service. More than a third of these 18 – seven – were stepping down from their posts, and retirement benefits helped drive compensation across the board.

Exercise May Boost Survival in Breast, Colon Cancer

TUESDAY, May 8 (HealthDay News) — Being physically active might lengthen the lives of people with breast and colon cancer, a new study suggests.

Exercise may also benefit patients with other cancers, but there is no substantial evidence to make that claim, the researchers added.

“We have lots of data that says physical activity after a cancer diagnosis is generally safe and is associated with many improvements in overall quality of life, and these data suggest that it may even be beneficial in terms of prolonging life,” said lead researcher Dr. Rachel Ballard-Barbash, associate director of the applied research program in the division of cancer control and population science at the U.S.

Study: Long use of any hormones poses cancer risk

CHICAGO (AP) – New research suggests that long-term use of any type of hormones to ease menopause symptoms can raise a woman’s risk of breast cancer.

It is already known that taking pills that combine estrogen and progestin – the most common type of hormone therapy – can increase breast cancer risk. But women who no longer have a uterus can take estrogen alone, which was thought to be safe and possibly even slightly beneficial in terms of cancer risk.

The new study suggests otherwise, if the pills are used for many years. It tracked the health of about 60,000 nurses and found that use of any kind of hormones for 10 years or more slightly raised the chances of developing breast cancer.

“There’s a continued increase in risk with longer durations of use and there does not appear to be a plateau,” said study leader Dr. Get more…

Tanning Bed Legislation Dies

A proposal to prohibit the use of tanning beds by anyone under 18 died in committee Friday.

The legislature’s Public Health Committee took no action on the measure Friday, which was the last day possible. If the bill had passed, any tanning facility worker who allowed someone under 18 to use a tanning would face a fine of $100.

At present the state requires anyone under 16 to provide written consent of their parent or guardian before using a tanning bed.

When Paramedics Suspect Stroke, They’re Usually Right

FRIDAY, March 30 When paramedics say a patient’s symptoms indicate a stroke, they are usually right, a new study suggests.

Researchers at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago examined the records of 5,300 patients brought to the center’s emergency department by emergency medical services.

The analysis revealed that paramedics identified stroke patients with a 99.3 percent specificity. A high specificity rate indicates there’s a high probability the patient actually has the diagnosed condition.

“If a paramedic thinks a patient is having a stroke, that should be a reliable indicator that the hospital’s stroke team should be activated,” study co-author Dr.
