The Leawood Parks and Recreation Department has closed the city’s aquatic center until Friday after learning that a person diagnosed with cryptosporidium may have been swimming there.

Officials said they were taking the action as a proactive measure and could not be sure that there was a cryptosporidium problem.

The city said it will implement counteractive and preventive measures. The pool already has an ultraviolet disinfection system aimed to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

Leawood said anyone who has visited the pool in recent days and experienced any symptoms should contact their health care professional.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said cryptosporidium is a germ found in the fecal matter of people who have been infected. It can cause diarrhea and can survive for days, even in properly chlorinated pools.
