Penelope Cruz says she isn’t afraid to grow old gracefully.

The actress believes her European background has given her a more relaxed attitude to ageing and says she is embracing every extra year and the changes in her appearance as she grows older.

The 37-year-old revealed that her laid-back approach is rare in youth-obsessed Hollywood.

“Birthdays are always something to celebrate. I’m looking forward to every step of the way,” she said during an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Maybe it’s because I’m from Spain, so I look at it in a different way than in a place like Los Angeles. I will always be a Spanish actress in Hollywood or wherever I work.”

Cruz is currently promoting the latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides. Having given birth to her first child earlier this year, son Leo by husband Javier Bardem, the star says she never wants to be afraid of getting older.

“There are a lot of things I keep from my roots and that is one of them – the way we look at ageing,” she said.

“I never want to be afraid of that. Change is good.”
